Course Description

This course on Positive Health will introduce the learner to the synergistic relationship between positive psychology and lifestyle medicine.  The theoretical foundations and models will be reviewed, such as PERMA-PLUS/PERMA+4, the Human Flourishing Model, and the Upward Spiral Theory of Lifestyle Change.  Evidence will be shared on positive psychology interventions that have been studied and found to positively influence each of the six lifestyle medicine pillars (nutrition, physical activity, sleep, stress, social connection & risky substance use).

Course Objectives

Course objectives: After completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Describe the historical development of positive psychology and lifestyle medicine, respectively, as well as the ways that they overlap and complement each other.
  • Compare and contrast theoretical models that integrate positive psychology & lifestyle medicine, including PERMA-PLUS/PERMA+4, Human Flourishing Model, & Upward Spiral Theory of Lifestyle Change.
  • List and describe at least one positive psychology intervention in each of the 6 pillars of lifestyle medicine.
  • Prescribe two positive psychology interventions that have been connected to all 6 pillars of lifestyle medicine.
