Course Description

This course will review the role of religion & spirituality in whole-person health and lifestyle medicine.  Theoretical models will be reviewed that propose pathways to mental & physical health, including religion/spirituality as provision for purpose, meaning, social support, & self-regulation of health behaviors.  The process of taking a spiritual history will be reviewed, along with assessments used from clinical, research-based and coping/disease contexts.   Approaches to incorporating faith-based programming will be presented, along with integration of religion/spirituality at the individual level.

Course Objectives

After completion of this course, the learner will be able to:

  • Distinguish between the definitions of religion and spirituality and the sub-dimensions of spirituality.

  • List at least 3 evidence-based findings on the influence of religion/spirituality on health behaviors.

  • Describe at least 1 integrative model that includes R/S, positive psychology, mental and physical health.

  • Choose a spiritual assessment based on context, including setting and patient/client needs.

  • Outline health-behavior change approaches that are faith-placed vs faith-based (and its sub-levels of faith-recognized and faith-integrated).

Michele is a National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coach and Certified Lifestyle Medicine Professional, specializing in the integration of lifestyle medicine, positive psychology and religion/spirituality. She is also an adjunct professor, teaching courses in pathophysiology and lifestyle medicine to undergraduate exercise science students. Michele is a certified instructor of mindfulness-based strengths practice (MBSP) through the VIA Institute on Character and has also completed advanced catechist training with the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland.
